I’ve been browsing through my files this week: I always take a photographic record of calligraphy orders you see.
Spencerian calligraphy place card in blue
I wanted to show you these wedding place cards written in Spencerian script, and in blue ink. They were letterpressed (with the wedding venue printed at the bottom of the card) and I added names by hand in calligraphy gouache.
Marriage proposals in calligraphy are a rare treat – and have to be absolutely perfect. Dobromir contacted me from his home in France to commission this very special proposal in 2011.
Marriage proposal in calligraphy - ribbon border
The lettering was in Spencerian script, with initial letters in red to begin each paragraph. Dobromir’s poem was in French, which is a beautiful language to write in calligraphy.
Marriage proposal in calligraphy - red orchid illustration
The border illustration, at Dobromir’s request, included white stargazer lilies and red orchids.

In late 2011 I was asked to create a very special keepsake of a love story. I suggested a vintage inspired love letter in calligraphy, with a few special touches: aged paper, lace and ribbon, a wax seal and a vintage postmark. They weren’t all so easy to find… but the end result is a calligraphy commission I’m very proud of.
I do love working with the team at Cardlab: they’re letterpress wedding invitation printers and their standards are second to none. Kate, Dan and their team come very highly recommended by Calligraphy For Weddings.
Copperplate calligraphy
Quality wedding invitation calligraphy
These invitations for Ann and Patrick were of a fabulous quality as ever. I added guests’ names in calligraphy in the copperplate style to complement the names of the bride and groom which were pre-printed at the top of the invitations.
Chris Bailie ordered these wonderfully rustic wedding place cards with copperplate calligraphy in a rich red ink.
wedding place cards
One of the very best aspects of working full time as a professional wedding calligrapher is the customer feedback I hear – and Chris sent the loveliest email:
“Hi Claire,
Thanks so much for the place names. They look wonderful, beautifully written, perfect for the setting, dispatched speedily … I’d recommend you to anyone. A pleasure to deal with too.
Please feel free to quote me as a testimony on your site, or let me know if you’d like a longer praise of your fab service!
Thanks again
Chris”
wedding place cards
As with all of our wedding calligraphy orders, these place cards were tied with a matching ribbon and beautifully presented on delivery. I like to think it shows how much we care and how much we appreciate the custom of lovely people like Chris!
